Akatsi College of Education Strengthens International Academic Ties with UNCG
Akatsi College of Education has taken another significant step towards expanding its international academic network following an engagement between the College’s Principal, Dr. Felix Kumedzro, and representatives of the University of North Carolina Greensboro (UNCG) in the United States.
The discussions focused on student exchange, faculty engagement, academic collaboration, research, professional development and specialised education. The initiative aligns with the College’s five-year strategic plan, which identifies local and international collaborations as important pillars for institutional growth and development.
First US Student Cohort Expected in November 2027
A major outcome of the engagement is the planned visit of the first cohort of students from the United States to Akatsi College of Education in November 2027, God willing.
The students are expected to come from UNCG’s Department of Specialized Education Services, marking an important milestone in the growing relationship between the two institutions.
The visit will provide the students with an opportunity to experience Ghana’s educational environment and interact with students, faculty members and academic programmes at Akatsi College of Education. It is also expected to promote cultural exchange, academic learning and knowledge-sharing between the two institutions.
Senior representatives from UNCG are also expected to accompany the first cohort, underscoring the university’s commitment to the initiative.
Developing a Sustainable Roadmap
Dr. Kumedzro emphasised the need for a clearly defined roadmap covering the short, medium and long term to ensure that the collaboration extends beyond an initial student exchange and develops into a sustainable institutional relationship.
The roadmap is expected to outline specific programmes and initiatives that will deliver measurable benefits to students, faculty members and both institutions.
UNCG brings considerable expertise in education and specialised academic fields that align with Akatsi College of Education’s teacher education mandate. Its Department of Specialized Education Services offers a particularly relevant area for engagement.
The broader School of Education at UNCG also has expertise in special education, educational leadership, counselling, educational research, data science, informatics and early childhood education. These areas present opportunities to explore joint academic programmes, research initiatives, professional development and other educational projects.
Dr. Morgan Chitiyo, whose academic and professional work focuses on specialised education, is also expected to play an important role in identifying practical areas where the expertise and resources of both institutions can be harnessed for mutual benefit.
Active Stakeholder Participation
The engagement highlighted the importance of active participation by College management, heads of department and other key stakeholders in developing the roadmap and identifying priority areas for collaboration.
Their involvement will help ensure that the proposed initiatives align with the College’s strategic priorities and address the academic and professional development needs of students and staff.
For Akatsi College of Education, this international engagement represents more than a student exchange. It offers an opportunity to strengthen the College’s global outlook, expose students and faculty members to new academic perspectives and professional networks, and promote the exchange of educational knowledge and best practices.
With the first US student cohort expected in November 2027, God willing, the initiative could mark a new chapter in Akatsi College of Education’s international academic engagement.
