The Science Department at the Akatsi College of Education is a dynamic academic unit committed to training future science teachers through high-quality teaching, guidance, research, and practical applications. The department is structured into four key units: biology, physics, chemistry, and physical education, each playing a crucial role in preparing pre-service teachers with strong subject knowledge and effective pedagogical skills.
In the department, the trainees are permitted to do the following course combinations: Science & Mathematics, Science & ICT, and Mathematics & Science, or ICT & Science. That is, they can major in science or minor in science. This flexibility allows students to tailor their education to their interests and career goals, ensuring they are well-equipped to teach in various educational settings. The department also emphasises the integration of technology in teaching, preparing teachers to use modern tools effectively in their classrooms.
The department is staffed by nine experienced faculty members, including two lecturers specialising in physics, three in chemistry, two in biology, one in physical education, and one laboratory technician. Each faculty member has between 16 and 25 years of teaching experience, bringing a wealth of expertise in science education, curriculum development, and hands-on laboratory instruction.
Dedicated to producing highly skilled and competent science teachers, the department emphasises student-centred learning, laboratory-based instruction, and innovative teaching methodologies. The presence of a laboratory technician ensures that practical sessions are effectively managed, providing students with essential hands-on experiences. Through its commitment to excellence, the Science Department continues to shape the next generation of teachers who will inspire and nurture scientific curiosity in future learners
