The department offers courses across Social science subjects and some Arts including Music, Dance and Drama including African studies.
Social Studies is inevitable for man’s peaceful coexistence and development. It nurtures the individual to be nationalistic, patriotic and tolerant and to understand human nature and its dynamics for communal living and development.
Training of teachers in Social Sciences and the Arts centre on development of desirable attitudes, values and skills for enhancing moral, spiritual, social, cultural and their emotional drive. This properly aligns with the college’s mission and motto: Head, Heart and Hands.
While the college is primarily a Technical/Vocational and Science institution that prepares the mind more in the cognitive and psychomotor skills, Social Studies complements this with the affective domain that helps to balance the individual’s mind and life in the right attitudes, human relationships, challenges and dealing with crisis as well as moral judgment for prudent decision making for peaceful coexistence.
We offer JHS and Upper Primary programmes in the Arts and Social Sciences Department. In the First year/Level 100 semester 1 and 2, all students, irrespective of the programme, offer African Studies and Liberal Studies from the department as part of the Foundational courses.
In Year Two semester 1, those in Upper Primary programme offer general Upper primary courses with specialization in teaching in Primary education while their counterparts in the JHS programme specialize in their respective subject combinations with one being a Major course and the other a Minor. This arrangement continues to the end of the 4-year B.Ed course.
