The Vocational and Technical Education Department, known as the VOTECH Department, is an amalgamation of four Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) areas, namely Home Economics, Visual Arts, Technical, and Agric Education.

The mission of the department is to provide quality vocational and technical education that enhances skills development, promotes lifelong learning, and equips student teachers with practical expertise to meet the demands of modern basic education in Ghana.

The VOTECH department, from its inception, is committed to empowering student teachers with the requisite knowledge, skills, and practical experience necessary to excel in today’s dynamic educational sector. The department focuses on bridging the gap between theoretical learning and hands-on practical application and preparing student teachers for successful careers in education and entrepreneurship. By fostering creativity, innovation, critical thinking, and adaptability, the department contributes to sustainable development and economic progress by equipping student teachers with entrepreneurial skills and essential life skills necessary for adult life.

The department boasts of twelve (12) dedicated faculty members with various degree qualifications and specializations in technical and construction education, home economics, hospitality and fashion education, arts and culture education, and agricultural education. The department currently offers Bachelor of Education – JHS programs in Technical, Visual Arts, Agric/Home Economics, and Home Economics/Agric combinations for students.

Head of department

Yayra Amitor Kumatia

Yayra Amitor Kumatia is a Lecturer in the Department of Vocational and Technical Education. She holds a Bachelors Degree in Home Economics Education and a Masters Degree in Home Economics Education with specialization in Family Life Management from the University of Education, Winneba. She is currently pursuing a PhD in Population Studies (Family Demography) at the University of Ghana, Legon. She has been teaching in the Vocational and Technical Education Department since 2012 and supports students to acquire theory and practical skills in teaching Home Economics in Basic Schools. She has five publications covering research topics in Home Economics Education and Family Life Management. She is also a co-author for two Modules (Application of Theories and Principles in Food and Nutrition; Processes and Procedures in Food and Nutrition) for the College for Distance and e-Learning of the University of Education, Winneba.
