Dr. Felix Kumedzro

Dr. Felix Kwame Kumedzro is a distinguished scholar of international repute with significant academic and leadership credentials to his credit. He is currently the Principal of Akatsi College of Education. Until his appointment, he was a senior lecturer at the University of Cape Coast’s College of Distance Education. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) and Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) degrees in Special Needs Education from Kenyatta University, Kenya, and the University of Cape Coast, respectively. He also possesses a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) degree in Educational Psychology from the University of Cape Coast and a certificate in Leadership Empowerment from the School of Management, University at Buffalo, USA.

Dr. Kumedzro is a teacher by profession with eight (8) years teaching experience at pre-tertiary level. These include OLA Boarding Basic School and OLA Teachers’ Training College, all in Cape Coast. Additionally, he has fourteen (14) years of experience in teaching and eleven (11) years of administrative exposure at the university level. He has served on several boards and committees within and outside the university community. He was the Head of postgraduate programmes at the College of Distance Education from 2020 to 2024 and a member of the College’s Middle Management Board from 2010 to 2024. He was also a member of the School of Graduate Studies Board at University of Cape Coast from 2020 to 2024.

He served as the Head of Students’ Support Services Unit at the College of Distance Education, UCC from 2016 to 2020. Dr. Felix Kumedzro was the first Regional Resident Coordinator to be appointed by UCC to manage the Distance Education porgramme in the Volta and Oti regions.

He is a researcher and have published thirteen (13) research articles in peer reviewed journals which have earned him international recognition. His research areas include support services for students with disabilities in higher institutions of learning, Inclusion of learners with special needs in regular classrooms, job satisfaction and retention of special needs education teachers in Sub-Saharan Africa. At the moment, he lectures the following courses at Masters and Ph.D levels:

  • Ethical and Legal Issues in Special and Inclusive Education
  • Assessment in Special Education
  • Contemporary Issues in Special Education

Dr. Felix Kumedzro has attended sixty-two (62) national and international conferences, workshops and seminars. He has presented his research findings at international conferences in Perth (Western Australia), Kenya (East Africa) and South Africa. Currently, He is a member of the International Association of Special Education Teachers: Member, National Association of Special Education Teachers in Boston, USA and a member of University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG). Again, he is a member of Conference of Principals of Colleges of Education in Ghana (PRINCOF) and PRINCOF Secretary for Volta and Oti Zone. Dr. Felix Kumedzro has a deep understanding of the complexities and challenges confronting the education sector in Ghana.
